This effort required a tedious shoring and excavation sequencing plan. The vision was to complete excavation and extend the basement in order to create a new education space for the congregation’s youth. The main church structure (over 100 years old) had a crawl-space and small, partial basement beneath it. The project scope included the demolition of Waverly House, a detached two story building dating to 1958. Berghammer Construction is proud to have collaborated with the congregation, Kahler Slater Architects and a skilled group of subcontractors to achieve a remarkable result. Immanuel Presbyterian Church, the oldest congregation in the city of Milwaukee at 177 years, recently completed an expansion and renovation of their magnificent church on North Astor Street in Milwaukee’s historic lower east side. Immanuel Presbyterian Church Renovation and Additions As part of the master planning process, the scope of the project also included six additional classrooms and a renovation of all the existing school space. A new gym addition, including four specialty classrooms for music, art and science activities, were added to the school structure. The existing parish office, which is attached to the school, was converted to a new school entrance and school office. In the most recent project, the old gym, which was attached to the worship space, was converted to parish offices and community rooms. This realignment of the space provided greater seating capacity within the worship space. The nave and sanctuary were reconfigured to align with the new entrance and narthex. The parish purchased an adjacent parcel so that site parking could be better located adjacent to a new church entrance. In order to create operational efficiencies and address the future needs of the growing parish population, Lumen Christi expanded its Mequon campus church and school.
